Nissan LEAF Graciously Steps into the Spotlight Again

Since its inception in 2010, the Nissan LEAF has prompted a substantial volume of chatter. Within its first shining moments in the world, the pioneering mass-market EV earned itself the "2010 Breakthrough Award" from Popular Mechanics magazine. Over the past two years, the LEAF has worked its way into countless conversations, received global recognition and even found itself the topic of several Bay Ridge Nissan blog posts. You'd think, after all that, we'd be sick of talking about it. But that couldn't be farther from the truth.

Like a proud parent patting its straight-A child on the back, we congratulate the Nissan LEAF on collecting two awards from the Japan Automotive Hall of Fame (JAHFA). Both presented for the 2011-2012 model year, JAHFA honored the LEAF with "Car of the Year" and "Car Design of the Year" awards.

As you can probably guess, there's a wide range of reasons for which judges chose the electric model. While all undoubtedly played a role in swaying the end decision, here are a few of the key LEAF characteristics highlighted by the JAHFA itself.

-          Attractiveness
-          Global recognition and competition
-          User-friendly EV-IT system
-          Ground-breaking innovation
-          Meticulous styling
-          Advanced aerodynamics
-          New-age interior
