Nissan Helps Habitat for Humanity Build More Sustainable Homes

Since the wind and water of Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005, Nissan has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to lend a helping hand.Happily, at this point in time the tide has ebbed a bit and the need is no longer critical. But just because flood warnings or earthquake readings aren't flashing across the TV screen doesn't mean Nissan has pulled back its donations. In fact, the exact opposite is true.

Earlier this month, Nissan Americas announced that they will be contributing an additional $2.5 million to the worthy organization with the goal of promoting sustainable construction. The automaker hopes to persuade customers, dealerships and stakeholders alike to take part in the partnership and contribute to Habitat for Humanity in whatever way they can.

In an effort to go forth with the Nissan goal, Habitat has agreed to put a portion of the large donation towards organizing sustainability "summits" for community members and providing fiscal support to the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Haiti next month. Like many new Nissan models, Habitat houses will be equipped with green features. Some of these features include: energy-efficient fluorescent lighting, high-performance windows, low-flowing plumbing features, and ENERGY STAR appliances.

"Both Nissan and Habitat are committed to sustainability, so it's fitting that our dollars will also support sustainable construction practices in Habitat affiliates nationwide,"1 said Vice Chairman of Nissan Bill Kruegar.
