Nissan Develops New EV Charger Tracking System

Electric vehicle charging stations can be hard to locate. No secret there. Because the eco-friendly automotive technology is so new, the proper infrastructure to support it is still in the works. But while some automakers try to cover up or ignore the problem, Nissan is dedicated to finding a solution.

In order to make owning the Nissan LEAF, or any EV for that matter, a bit easier, the automaker has launched an innovative new tracking system. Using an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) program, Nissan can track where exactly its LEAF models are plugged in and charged. This information then moves to the Nissan CARWINGS Data Center where it is sorted, analyzed, and placed back into the electric vehicle's navigation system. In this way, Nissan can provide EV owners with an updated, comprehensive database for finding the nearest charging station.

Currently, the automaker is beta testing the EV tracking technology with around 13,000 Nissan LEAF models in Japan. After extensive research, the system will be set and ready to go for a broader market including the LEAF drivers in the Brooklyn area.
